The King (2019)

DISCLAIMER

This film is an utter disappointment for Ivan Kaye’s fans. From what we can see, we are convinced that his character’s story has been cut out of the film during editing along with a lot of other material leaving only meaningless background appearances. You can find more about the editing now on our character page for Lord Scrope.

If you are considering to watch the film mainly to see Ivan in it, you should not waste more than two hours of your life on it. We will try to show you all of the material that is left of him in one place soon.

We will also rework this page as soon as we find the time for it and leave our prior posts up for archival reasons.

For more interesting recent and upcoming work of Ivan see our pages and articles on Vikings, King Aelle, The Dark Tower, and Gunpowder Milkshake or check the full list of Ivan’s productions and move on from there.

Thank you for checking this page!

Basic Info

Release dates of The King: 2nd September 2019 screening at the Venice Film Festival, 3th October 2019 screening at the BFI London Film Festival, 11th October 2019 limited theatrical release in the US, 1st November 2019 available for streaming on Netflix.

We got a tiny glimpse of Ivan’s Lord Scrope on the first official still and in the teaser trailer. It doesn’t look too promising. More info after the world premiere in Venice.

To our knowledge as of early October 2019, the famous Southampton Plot has been left out of the film completely. This is especially deplorable as Ivan’s character Lord Scrope, historically a favourite confidant of Henry V, played a part in this conspiracy that historians have not been able to clarify fully to date.

Thus the evaluation of Lord Scrope’s role and the conspiracy as a whole is currently open to debate and had the potential of shedding a different (potentially unfavourable) light on Henry V, opening up a great opportunity to make use of Ivan’s enormous versatility and ability to make an emotional impact for giving the story and the main character an unexpected turn and additional complexity based on modern historical debates.

Although Ivan’s posture and expression on this official still look promisingly uncomfortable for those who know his work, it is just yet another disappointingly blurry background shot

As this opportunity seems to have been given away, there is not much left for us to expect in terms of screentime and space given to Ivan to show his strengths in this film. He seems to be visible in the background in several scenes, hanging around the king as can be expected of a lord, but that is all we have seen so far.

We will, however, rework this page after the public release on Netflix with more detailed information and set up a character page for Ivan’s Lord Scrope in any case. We also hope to get permission to show you some photos of Ivan behind the scenes of the film.

Until then, please have a look at our previous posts about the movie. Here are the links:
